Deep Sea Fishing in Punta Cana: Choosing the Month, the Trip and the Fish from Makai

Published October 25, 2026 7 min read

The boats that fish the deep water off Punta Cana leave from Marina Cap Cana, about 4.4 miles by road from Makai, roughly 11 minutes in the car. What decides a good day is less the boat than the timing: each fish has its months, and the marina publishes a calendar that anglers across the south-east use to plan. This guide starts there, with which month suits which fish, then covers how long a trip runs, what the law and the marina say must go back in the water, and what it means to fish inside a protected marine sanctuary.

Which month should you book for the fish you want?

Marina Cap Cana posts its own fishing calendar, and the Ministry of Environment's management plan for the local marine sanctuary notes that anglers across the south-east of the country commonly plan by it. Read it as a set of overlapping seasons rather than one high season. Blue marlin run from May to October and peak in July. White marlin come earlier, March to July, at their best in May and June. Sailfish follow from August to November, best in September and October, and wahoo and tuna carry the fishing into the winter.

The same plan reports the marina director's estimate that traffic peaks from August to December, at up to 60 boats a day, which lines up with the busiest part of the calendar. If you want a quieter dock, aim outside those months; if you want the season at full strength, the marina's Cap Cana Classic billfish tournament is set for 12 to 14 November 2026.

How long is a trip, and how far out do the boats go?

The sanctuary's management plan describes sport fishing here as outings of 3 to 6 hours, practised all year. The marina's own charter request form goes further, offering half a day or one to four days, and asks how experienced the group is, from rookie to pro, so the crew can match the boat and the plan. Nothing on that form is a price; it is a request, and the reply sets the terms.

The distance to fishable water is short because of where Cap Cana sits. The Mona Passage, about 80 miles of open sea between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, has submerged banks that rise from about 1,000 feet of water to 300 feet below the surface, and bait gathers over them. One captain's favourite spot in a sport-fishing magazine's account was about 12 miles out. The same water is known for changeable seas, so anyone prone to seasickness should take the shorter trip first.

Which fish go back, and how should they be handled?

Three different sources set the rules on board. The marina describes itself as a catch-and-release marina and a member of the Billfish Foundation, so marlin and sailfish caught from its boats are released. Separately, Resolution 023/2017 of the Ministry of Environment bans fishing for every species of shark and ray nationwide, with no end date, so a shark on the line is cut loose, not kept.

The third is about how a release is done. The sanctuary plan notes that catch and release still kills some billfish, and that the losses fall when crews follow the rules, above all by not lifting the fish out of the water, not even for a photograph, and releasing it in the water once it has been subdued. If the picture matters to you, ask for it to be taken alongside the boat. On a charter, a booking marketplace's guide says the crew takes care of the fishing permits; anyone planning to fish from their own boat should ask CODOPESCA, the national fisheries authority, what licence applies.

What does fishing inside a marine sanctuary mean?

The sea off Cap Cana lies within the Southeast Reefs Marine Sanctuary, created in 2009 by Decree 571-09 and covering about 3,000 square miles from the Mona Passage south and west along the coast. Fishing is not banned in it, but it is managed water, and the management plan is frank about the limits of what anyone knows: there are no official national statistics on sport fishing and no systematic monitoring by the fisheries authority, so nobody can say exactly how many fish are taken or released each year.

The plan lists what visiting anglers are after: wahoo, dorado (mahi-mahi), barracuda, blue and white marlin, yellowfin tuna and sailfish. For an owner, the practical effect is simple. Choose a crew that releases billfish properly, keep what the rules allow and what you will eat, and treat the reefs closer to shore as a place to look rather than to fish.

Bringing the catch home to Makai

The fish worth keeping are the ones a booking marketplace's 2026 guide calls good eating: mahi-mahi, typically 10 to 90 lb, wahoo, 10 to 120 lb, and yellowfin tuna, usually 20 to 50 lb with some over 100 lb. Even a modest mahi is more than one family eats in a night, so agree with the crew before you leave the dock how much you will keep, and ask them to clean and portion it at the marina.

Makai's 216 residences are delivered fully furnished, which means a working kitchen is waiting 11 minutes from the dock: grill the first fillets the same evening, freeze the rest in meal-sized packs, and share the surplus with neighbours. For an owner who rents the residence out, a fishing day is also an easy thing to point guests toward, with the marina's request form as the place to start.
