Kitesurfing in the Dominican Republic, planned from Makai: one beach nearby and two coasts worth the trip

Published November 1, 2026 8 min read

The Dominican Republic has three distinct kitesurfing coasts, and an owner at Makai Residences in Cap Cana can reach all of them by road. One is close: Playa Blanca, a reef beach with a kite school, about 9 miles from Makai. The other two are journeys rather than errands: Punta Salinas on the Caribbean south coast, about 177 miles away, where the wind builds through the afternoon, and Buen Hombre in the north-west, about 280 miles away, known for flat, shallow water. This guide sets out how each one rides, when to go, and how the protected sea off Makai's own shore fits into the plan.

Why does a Makai rider drive to launch?

Makai's own beach is Playa Caracol, about a 1,600 ft walk from the buildings, and it is a beach for a swim rather than a kite session: none of the kite guides read for this page names a launch on Cap Cana's own shore. The beach where an owner finds a school and a launch is Playa Blanca, which one hotel group's guide places inside the Punta Cana Resort & Club, close to Cap Cana, and describes as open to the public.

Measured from Makai's coordinates on an open routing engine, Playa Blanca is about 9 miles by road. That is close enough to ride before lunch and be back at the pool by mid-afternoon, which is why it is the starting point here rather than the whole story.

How does Playa Blanca ride?

It is a reef beach. The hotel group's guide describes shallow, calm water with coral a few yards from shore, and one kite-spot directory says the beach is best at high tide and very shallow over the reef at low tide. Plan the session around the tide table before leaving Cap Cana, not on the sand.

The same directory gives two main wind seasons, December to March and July and August, and says the wind tends to be better in the morning or in the late afternoon and evening than in the middle of the day. For a Makai owner on a winter stay, that makes Playa Blanca the beach for regular, short sessions, with the longer trips below saved for when you want something different.

A kitesurfer leaning back off his board in shallow turquoise water by a palm-lined shore, the kind of session a Makai owner drives about 9 miles to Playa Blanca for.

What is Punta Salinas like on the south coast?

Punta Salinas sits near Baní, at the end of a bay on the Caribbean coast, about an hour's drive west of Santo Domingo; from Makai it is about 177 miles by road. One kiteboarding retailer's travel guide describes its wind as thermal: very calm mornings, then wind that builds through the afternoon, from about 18 to 35 mph (about 16 to 30 knots) on a hot day. The wind blows through the bay onshore onto the point.

It is not a wave spot. The same guide describes chop in the bay, a very small and often very flat patch just off the point, a sandy and shelly beach, and some shallow reef off the point. It recommends the spot for intermediate and advanced riders, tells beginners to stay in the bay upwind of the launch, and warns that there are no lifeguards or safety boats, so nobody should kite there alone.

Why do riders make the trip to Buen Hombre?

For flat water. Buen Hombre is on the north-west coast in Monte Cristi province, about 280 miles from Makai by road. One kitesurfing magazine's travel guide describes a flat, shallow lagoon that is ideal for learning and for practising tricks, with waves out on the reef for those who want them and chop on the inside when the wind is strong.

The same guide says Buen Hombre has, on average, 6 to 10 knots (about 7 to 12 mph) more wind than Cabarete, and that for three summer months the wind averages 25 to 35 knots (about 29 to 40 mph). It names Santiago as the closest airport, about a 90-minute taxi ride away, and Santo Domingo's airport as about 3 hours by car. From Cap Cana, that makes Buen Hombre a trip of several days, not a day out.

When does each coast fit into an owner's year?

Side by side, the three share the calendar. Playa Blanca's winter season, December to March, suits a winter stay in Cap Cana. The retailer's guide puts the country's kite season at December to September, stronger in spring and summer, with heavy rain in October and November, and the magazine guide puts Buen Hombre's strongest stretch in the summer.

Distance decides the rest. Playa Blanca fits around a morning or a late afternoon. Punta Salinas is a weekend: the road passes Santo Domingo, and the Zona Colonial, about 122 miles from Makai, makes a natural overnight stop on the way. Buen Hombre is worth planning as a week, with the flight through Santiago in mind.

What should a rider know about the sea off Cap Cana?

The water off Makai's shore is inside the Southeast Reefs Marine Sanctuary, created in 2009 by Decree 571-09 and covering about 3,000 square miles of sea along this coast. Its 2024 management plan calls for recreational navigation to run under speed controls and the sanctuary's other guidelines, and sets aside marked elkhorn coral conservation areas in Cap Cana for conservation and research only. The plan does not mention kites, so ask the school which water it uses and keep clear of any marked area.

Weather notices matter as well. On 15 March 2026 the Emergency Operations Centre, acting on a weather bulletin about rising swell and strong wind, ordered small and fragile vessels to stay in port on the Caribbean coast from Isla Saona to Cabo Engaño. A kite is not a boat, but a day when small craft are kept in port is not a day for a session over a reef.

What should a Makai owner settle before packing a kite?
